Candida Diet Friendly Broth and Stock

Candida Diet Friendly Broth and Stock

Chicken broth/stock is an ingredient I use often in my yeast free cooking.  It really is best to make your own chicken broth/stock from scratch, so that you can ensure it contains all candida diet friendly ingredients but there are a few brands that I have decided to use in a crunch.

The issue with most store bought chicken broth/stock for the candida dieter is that these products usually contain different forms of sugar and preservatives.  The most common problematic ingredients are monosodium glutamate (MSG), cane sugar, honey, high fructose corn syrup, evaporated cane juice and autolyzed yeast extract.  These ingredients are so common in store bought chicken broth/stock brands that after reading what seems like every chicken broth/stock label in the supermarket I could only find 3 varieties that seemed okay.  As I learn more about MSG and the way manufacturers disguise the fact that their products do contain it, I fear that even these brands may not be completely yeast free.   These brands are however unsweetened and that is very important to the candida diet.   Remember that making homemade broth is the only way to make sure you are not consuming any ingredients that are offensive to the candida diet.

I learned the hard way that yeast does not have to be listed on the ingredients. I am actually allergic to torula yeast, autolyzed yeast extract and a couple others, I got really sick after cooking with a store bought stock that did not have yeast on the ingredient list. I contacted the company to ask if it had yeast in it, was told that the ‘new nutrition label’ law, food makers were only required to list the top 8 allergens. Now I don’t eat any boxed or bagged food without contacting the companies first.
